Its recession time...folks are hurting, I paint paintings to push, experiment, learn and to share, especially smaller studies which are most I post here. My tight fist holding onto these studies does little for anyone, and storing them begins to take up precious space...and I also want folks to enjoy my art; that said, I've decided to have some additional fun with my sale pieces.
If you see a painting here in this blog, "Will Paint for Gas" and can email me attempting to tell me in artist terms what it is about the work you enjoy...(saying, "I like it because its pretty"...or "its' good" are not artist terms) then I will give you an additional 50% off on the work! How's that!
See, artists understand there is a passive looking at art work, and that which is an engaging appreciation. For painters, a lot of thought, years of growth, obstacles to overcome and so forth is in these works.
Can you tell there is a teacher in me? I think attempting to understand the art in the art is a very high compliment to the artist, whereas many just presume the complement rests most high in the selling of the work, not I. I want to know you are looking at it...
peace

5"x 7" oil on panel...plein air

This little plein air catches the mood and spirit of Wetmore
Landing, the little pockets of beaches found hiking along
the shore and become your private little escape for an
afternoon. Quite lovely...

4"x 5-1/2" study Peppers 'n Cherry Tomato
mounted upon stained luan, ready 2 hang

This was an instudio study where the aim was to
experiment with broken edges on form. How far such
could be taken without affecting the sense of realism, and
how much color and the play of light serve to maintain
that sense. A successful piece I thought, and served to
be very instructive for me...

a treadmill) price...is
$85.00 ...not including shipping

More Bargain Priced works...

To see this work larger just click on image above!
oil 4-1/2" x 5-1/2" mounted on luan wood
ready to hang...
This study was of an ongoing series of experiments,
to count and thus limit brushstrokes to come to some
determination of what was necessary or essential to
capture realism yet painterly. That idea of one less
brushstroke, and the work would feel unfinished,
yet one more and it becomes fiddling and not really
essential for the painting to work.
The idea is not to develop any habit of actually
counting brushstrokes in paintings, but to help
foster a gut hunch or intuitive sense afield
painting outdoors. An effort of purer economy,
control, mastery of the brush. Confidence from
a direct use of color and values with an aim to
fulfill an alla prima axiom that goes, "a brushstroke
laid, is a brushstroke stayed!"
This painting took 171 brushstrokes...start to
finish.

Painting is a way of seeing something deeply, and the
prolonged time it takes to paint something really builds
a unique intimacy between the artist and the subject.
I enjoyed all the subtle color hidden in the grays of
the metal. A very fun piece to paint, but now time to
let go...and give it a proper home.

In addition to the visual arts that I teach,
I also teach darkroom photography, the old
traditional wet/dry methods so that we do
not lose the sense of history and appreciation
for the photograph as an art form.
The challenge with this work is that I
typically do not paint with black, but mix
my own darks. This painting here I believe is
validation that dark enough darks with my
limited palette are more than possible, and
the advantage in making one's own darks is
that you can tweak or lean the dark toward
a color temperature that will add extra pop
in the illusion of depth.

Camp 20 Creek color vibration study w/red undertone
6"x 6" oil mounted on stained luan

I did a number of works experimenting with reddish
undertone following some study of the teachings of
Edgar Payne and Emile A. Gruppe. Red is the opposite
color of greens, and contrasting green paint against
a reddish undertone excites the greens, and causes the
brushstroke to feel as to better imitate light. This
was one such study...

Few more to tempt you...
Well...I'm just a bit short on the money I need to
buy the professional model snowblower I'll need to
clear the long driveway of our new house. An Ariens
11.5 horse that throws 16 tons of snow per hour.
Up here in NE Wisconsin, we can get snow as early
as October...though it rarely sticks. Still, would
like to get what I need and have it ready. This means
I'm willing to sacrifice a few more paintings...and
might translate as a good deal for some potential
collector here.
I'll post three today, and maybe a few others...
The first is a painting I did this past April, a plein
air (painted on location...), 8"x 10"...oil
I was quite taken by the backlit glare of these tag
alders along a spring thaw snowy bank. The promise
of spring...water opening. Enjoyed the brushwork and
capturing the light's mood..
Spring River Alder

Original price- $575.00

is $275 plus shipping & handling

park for a week a couple summers ago and produce a
number of paintings...

Sherman Tank...plein air

9"x 12" oil on board
This was painted in Wabeno, WI at their community park,
and what struck my eye was the beauty of the light,
the reflected color and indirect light...creating
this sense of beauty. An irony I thought, of something
known for purposes of carrying out vast destruction to
sit so still, peaceful..and such color.
It carried nobility for its purpose, proud...

8"x 10" oil Gooseberry Falls- Emphasis brevity!
After painting on location at Gooseberry Falls in northern
Minnesota, and several paintings that followed, a particular

in paint bring you to a place where you whittle down what
is not absolutely essential to the barebones.
